Choose your conversion

Each conversion has its own page, with the output already selected and notes on what changes.

Which output format should you choose?

Pick what you need and see the format to use. The converter above lets you set it before you click Convert.

What do you need from the converted image?

Choose PNG, or WebP for a website.

PNG and WebP keep transparent areas. JPG can't, so Pixformat fills them with white when you choose JPG. PNG is lossless; WebP is offered only if your browser can create it.

WebP−98.1%34.2 KB

Choose WebP where it is supported, otherwise JPG.

Google's tests found lossy WebP files 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEGs. Pixformat saves WebP at a fixed quality of about 82% and JPG at about 85%, with no quality slider. Each converted file shows how much it grew or shrank.

Choose JPG.

JPG is the safest choice for forms, apps and older software that ask for it. If you are converting WebP downloads, the WebP to JPG converter is made for that.

Choose PNG.

PNG doesn't add compression loss, so sharp edges and small text stay crisp. It can't bring back detail a lossy format already removed, and PNG files are usually larger.

AVIFLossy, fixed quality (about 65%)Usually: depends on your browser's encoderWebsite images where AVIF is supported

WebP and AVIF are offered only if your browser can create them. A PNG doesn't add compression loss, but it can't bring back detail that a lossy format such as JPG or WebP already removed. Smaller image files can help pages load faster. Google's tests found lossy WebP files 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEGs. Your results will vary.

What happens to transparency, animation and file size

  • Transparency

JPG can't store transparency, so transparent areas turn white.

  • Animated GIFs

Only the first frame is converted, so you get a still image.

    File size

Converting a photo to PNG usually makes it larger; to JPG or WebP, smaller.

What Pixformat can't convert yet

Pixformat doesn't read HEIC, AVIF, TIFF, ICO, PDF or video files, so it skips them when you add them. It also can't resize images or let you choose the compression quality. If you need one of those, use the original file or another tool.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pixformat free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, Pixformat adds no watermark to your images, and the page loads no ad scripts.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Pixformat converts your images in your browser, on your device, and never uploads them. The site loads Google Analytics, only if you accept, to measure visits, but it doesn't receive your image files.

Which formats can I convert from and to?

From JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP. To JPG and PNG, plus WebP and AVIF in browsers that can create them.

Does converting an image lose quality?

It depends on the output. PNG is lossless, so it adds no compression loss. JPG, WebP and AVIF are lossy: Pixformat saves them at a fixed quality of about 85%, 82% and 65%, and a lossy file can't get back detail it has already lost. Keep your originals.

Can I convert several images at once?

Yes. Add as many files as you like, convert them together and download them one by one or as a ZIP. Very large batches depend on your device's memory.

What happens to animated GIFs?

Only the first frame is converted, so you get a still image.

Which output format should I choose?

JPG for photos and for forms or apps that ask for it, PNG for screenshots, logos and anything with transparency, and WebP for images shown on websites, where your browser can create it. JPG fills transparent areas with white, so choose PNG or WebP to keep them. See the WebP to JPG, PNG to JPG and PNG to WebP pages for details.

Is there a file size limit?

Pixformat sets no file size limit, and nothing is uploaded. Very large images can still fail, depending on your browser and the memory of your device. A file that takes more than 30 seconds to convert is stopped. If a file doesn't convert, try a smaller image.
