About Pixformat
What Pixformat is
Pixformat is a free image converter that runs in your browser. You add JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF or BMP files and save them as JPG or PNG, plus WebP and AVIF when your browser can create them. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no ad scripts on the pages.
How a conversion works
Your browser decodes the image, draws it on a canvas and saves it in the format you chose. The work runs in your browser, in background workers when the browser supports them, and the code that converts your files doesn't send them anywhere. The site does load Google Analytics to count visits; the privacy page explains what it measures.
What stays fixed
Pixformat keeps its settings simple, so every conversion behaves the same way.
| Output | Setting |
|---|---|
| JPG | Lossy, fixed quality of about 85%. Transparent areas are filled with white |
| PNG | Lossless. Transparency is kept |
| WebP | Lossy, fixed quality of about 82%. Offered only if your browser can create it |
| AVIF | Lossy, fixed quality of about 65%. Offered only if your browser can create it |
Images are never resized, so the width and height stay the same. Animated GIF and WebP files are converted to a still image from their first frame. There is no quality slider.
What Pixformat can't do yet
Pixformat doesn't read HEIC, AVIF, TIFF, ICO, PDF or video files, and it can't resize images or let you choose the compression quality. For those, use the original file or another tool.
Where the numbers on the converter pages come from
Each converter page, such as WebP to JPG or JPG to WebP, has a table of file sizes. They come from a script that runs this same converter on a fixed set of synthetic test images, and each table shows the date and the browser used. Your own images will give different results, which is why every converted file shows its own size change.
