How to convert JPG to PNG
- Add your JPG files. Both .jpg and .jpeg files work.
- Leave the output on PNG, then click Convert.
- Download the PNG files, one by one or all together as a ZIP.
What a PNG can and can't do for a JPG
- It stops further loss, not past loss. A JPG already discarded some detail when it was saved. PNG is lossless, so it keeps the picture exactly as the JPG looks now, but it can't restore sharpness, remove blocky artifacts or bring back colour the JPG lost.
- The file usually gets bigger. PNG stores every pixel without lossy compression, so a photo saved as PNG is often much larger than the JPG. Pixformat shows the size change on every file.
- No transparency appears. A JPG has no transparent areas, and converting it doesn't cut out the background. The PNG keeps the same solid background.
- Same dimensions. Pixformat doesn't resize images, so the PNG has the same width and height.
When JPG to PNG makes sense
Convert when a tool or form asks for PNG, when you will edit an image several times and don't want each save to compress it again, or when you plan to remove the background later in an editor and need a format that can hold transparency. If you only want a smaller or easier-to-share file, keep the JPG.
JPG to PNG: common questions
Will the PNG look better than my JPG?
No. It will look the same. PNG only avoids adding new compression on top of what the JPG already has.
Why is my PNG so much larger?
Photographs contain many slightly different pixels, and PNG keeps all of them. JPG gets small by throwing some of that detail away.
Can I make the background transparent here?
No. Pixformat only changes the file format. Remove the background in an image editor, then save the result as PNG.
What if I need the opposite or a lighter format?
Use the PNG to JPG converter to go back, or the PNG to WebP converter for a modern web format.
