Will the file get smaller?

Pixformat re-encodes the picture as lossy WebP at a fixed quality of about 82%. The saving depends on how the JPG was made.

How was your JPG made?
A full-quality photo, typical directionJPGWebPIllustrative, not to scale

Google's tests found lossy WebP files 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEGs. Your own result can differ, which is why each file shows its size change.

A JPG that is already small, results varyJPGWebPIllustrative, not to scale

If the JPG was already squeezed, there is little left to save and the WebP can come out about the same size or larger. In that case keep the JPG.

Quality can drop a little. Both formats are lossy, so converting a JPG re-compresses it. Keep the original JPG if you may need it again.

Does your browser support WebP output?

Your browser creates the WebP file, so the WebP option only appears when it can.

JPG to WebP: common questions

Will the WebP be smaller than my JPG?

Often, for photos, but not every time. Each converted file shows how much it grew or shrank, so you can decide which one to keep.

Is a JPG to WebP conversion lossless?

No. A JPG is already lossy and the WebP is saved as lossy too, at about 82%. Quality can drop a little more, so keep the original JPG.

Can I pick the WebP quality?

No. The quality is fixed and there is no slider.

Why is JPG selected instead of WebP?

Your browser can't create WebP files, so the converter falls back to JPG. Try another browser or a newer version.

Do all programs open WebP?

Not all. Browsers do, but some older editors, forms and apps still ask for JPG. For those, the WebP to JPG converter goes the other way.

Can I convert PNG files too?

Yes, the PNG to WebP converter is made for them and keeps transparent backgrounds.
