What changes when a WebP becomes a JPG

Why convert WebP to JPG?

Many websites serve pictures as WebP, so saving an image from a page can leave you with a .webp file. Some editors, document tools and upload forms still don't accept WebP, while JPG works almost everywhere. If you only need to open, share or upload the image, JPG is the safer choice.

WebP to JPG: common questions

Does converting WebP to JPG lower the quality?

It can. JPG is lossy, so the image is compressed again when it's saved. At the fixed quality of about 85% that Pixformat uses, the difference is usually small for photos, but sharp edges and small text can look softer.

Why is my JPG bigger than the original WebP?

WebP is usually more efficient than JPG, so a JPG saved at similar quality is often larger. The size change appears on each converted file.

Why does my browser save images as WebP?

Many sites send WebP to browsers because it is lighter than JPG, so "Save image as" can give you a .webp file even when you expected a JPG.

Will the JPG keep the same dimensions?

Yes. Pixformat doesn't resize, so the width and height match the WebP. The conversion happens on your device and the images are not sent to a server.

Can I get a PNG instead?

Yes. Use the WebP to PNG converter to keep transparent backgrounds.
